"You don't have to put on the red liiiiight!" Last week we have had the great honor of taking care of our neighbors chickens while they were away on vacation. Needless to say, the kids loved it and Mom got in there with her camera to get some shots of them getting ready for bed. The red illumination you see is their night-time heat lamp for warmth.
As soon as we walked in, 7 of them were on the roost in the distance but by the time I crouched and shot, they all hopped off!
I must be more sneaky - more images like this, soon!

Chicken's are some pretty neat looking birds...very dirty though. We use to raise them. I always liked collecting the eggs.

Chicken memories evoked.... As a kid, we lived adjacent to a little chickenyard in New Orleans. One of our less kind sports was to catch little green or brown anole lizards and throw them over the fence, and into the chicken yard to watch how long it would take the chickens to spot and gobble up the poor hapless things. It wasn't pretty.

These chickens live in the luxury of climate control. Ours have to endure the cold, although they do have a tiightly built chicken house. Taking photos of them is a challenge, as you say, they hop off their roost as soon as one walks in, unless it is really late at night.

What a prized shot -- you're a good neighbor. Let me know if you figure out how to be sneaky with two kids in tow! Love, Y.M.
